Hello League member,
Happy fall! Our volunteers have not skipped a beat while we prepare for elections next year with many programs, partnerships, and events ahead of us. Over the past year, we focused on the November 2022 election and a close partnership with the LWV of California as we hosted the state convention in San Francisco and planned the first ever Drag for Democracy fundraiser.
Drag for Democracy was a joyous celebration of the intersection between voting and equality for all, and it was even featured on ABC7 News!

Community building continues to be important, and it’s been great to see both new and familiar faces over the past year! I look forward to many more opportunities for collaboration with partner organizations and in-person events over the coming months. I hope to see you at an upcoming happy hour or member event.
I’m pleased to submit LWVSF's 2022–2023 year-end financial report. The League of Women Voters of San Francisco remains financially stable thanks to our annual appeal and Drag for Democracy, which were both successful fundraisers.
During the November 2022 election, we provided nonpartisan resources to voters and we continued to build upon our partnerships to host events, educate our members about climate justice through our “Spotlight On” event series, and take action on redistricting, open government, and community safety. None of this would have been possible without your continued support and the strength of all our members and volunteers.

At our annual meeting in June, members approved our new board, welcoming Angela Brown, Steve Cohen, Kate Degelau-Pierce, Charlotte Dodson, and Ruth Grace Wong to our leadership team. We also affirmed our commitment to working on community safety, open government, and redistricting reform.
Our Membership Committee has been tireless in helping to make sure that members are engaged through events such as our water education series, member happy hours, and our flourishing book club. Our Communications Committee keeps us all updated through our social media, monthly newsletter, news on our blog, and website updates.
Our Development Committee kept all of this running with the successful Drag for Democracy event in addition to the regular fundraising and grant planning strategy that powers our programming.
With your support, over the past year we provided unbiased voter information for the November 2022 election. We educated voters about the people running for office through our candidate forums and statements, and about local ballot measures through our Pros & Cons Guide, speakers bureau presentations, and pros and cons discussions. LWVSF supported Voter’s Edge, a website where voters can get factual, nonpartisan information about the candidates and propositions on their ballot.
I’m also proud of our Youth Council, led by Charlotte Dodson, and their efforts to mobilize and educate young people in San Francisco about voting and getting involved. They’ve already launched a podcast, and more episodes are planned in the coming months!

Along with our partners, the League continues to call for redistricting reform and the critical need for independent redistricting and community representation. The League also continues to be a strong voice for community safety, calling for an end to racist pretext stops and supporting the Compassionate Alternative Response Team, also known as CART.
A highlight of the past year was hosting the LWVC Convention in San Francisco where we were able to meet with fellow Leaguers from across the state. LWVSF also won the “Leaning into League Possibilities Award” for our expanded voter education program, which translated educational materials into multiple languages. As part of our grant from the San Francisco Department of Elections, we were able to translate video captions into seven additional languages and share them on our YouTube channel.
We also danced and sashayed the night away at Drag for Democracy, honoring leaders for their steadfast commitment and fight to advance equality for all people. It was a sold-out crowd and a successful fundraiser for both the San Francisco and California Leagues.
We’ve also been returning to more in-person events! Our holiday party was so well attended that we spilled over onto the sidewalk to enjoy drinks and nibbles in the warm December sun. Our spring fling picnic was a great opportunity to socialize with other members in Golden Gate Park — we even had a children's section this year.
We also have an enthusiastic book club that continues to choose thought-provoking books to drive conversation with other members. I’ve really enjoyed reading these books along with others. All members are welcome to email the Membership Committee to join the book club and help choose the next book.
I was also proud to nominate two of our League members to represent LWVSF on city committees. I nominated Maxine Anderson to the Sunshine Ordinance Task Force, a fitting role to add to her outstanding dedication to government transparency and inclusivity. I’ve also nominated Ruth Grace Wong, our new board secretary, to represent LWVSF on the Ballot Simplification Committee, a critical position on the city body that makes our ballot easily understandable for all San Franciscans.
I’m excited for the year ahead and what we’ll accomplish. LWVSF remains dedicated to educating voters and advocating for important issues. I hope you will remain in contact with our activities through our newsletter, social media, or perhaps at an upcoming happy hour or event.
We also need volunteers for our upcoming voter education events and are beginning a volunteer matching process to make sure that members are plugged in where they can be most useful. If you’re interested in volunteering or volunteer matching, please email our volunteer coordinator.
Thank you for your continued support of the League of Women Voters of San Francisco. I look forward to what we will accomplish together!
In unity,
Alison Goh
