Big changes coming
San Francisco's historic Presidio may be changing dramatically over the next few years if the recommendations of a report released today are implemented. The changes include building a hotel and a building with three theaters as well as a museum of modern art. The old Herbst Exhibition Hall as well as other buildings will be demolished if this plan is adopted. This being San Francisco, you can expect a lot of arguing about whether or not the plan would be an improvement, but it is certainly a bold vision and would have a major impact on the Presidio and the area around it. This is something that civic-minded citizens will want to know more about. The public is invited to comment until July 31, and there will be public meetings held. For further information go to the Presidio Park Trust website.

Hello, I am delighted that the League is monitoring the rapidly emerging idea of transforming a National HIstoric Landmark, and part of a national park, the Presidio, into something that will threaten the Presidio's status as a National Landmark. The proposed art museum will change the Presidio into something other than a National Park.
A powerful and well funded machine is pushing the idea of a 100,000 square foot contemporary art museum in a National HIstoric Landmark. The National Park Service has registered its protest. The Presidio Historical Association website at presidioassociation.org is a more comprehensive resource to understand the new dangers facing this most valuable San Francisco and natinal historical site.
Also, should the League desire a speaker on the subject of the Presidio, please contact our President, Gary Widman, at gwidman@mindspring.com

Recently I attended tour of the Presidio with a group from the LWVSF. The tour illuminated the history of the Presidio and the history of the Presidio Trust. It is much easier to put planning ideas in context when you see the historic aspects of the Presidio, natural beauty of the setting, the neighborhoods of military housing being revitalized, hear what's going to happen to the old Public Hospital , businesses and non-profits that now have moved into renovated buildings, restaurants and yoga classes all in the park. We ( 200 million plus) are all stakeholders in this National Park project. It is vital that as many of us as possible take the opportunity to tour the Presidio and add our voices to the Planning process.
Presidio Trust is offering tours twice a week through July. I urge you to take this marvelous opportunity to learn more about our newest National Park.
