Are you taking the car?

The latest issue of Urbanist, the monthly publication of SPUR (San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association) includes a long, thoughtful article "Muni on the Rise." If you haven't seen the print publication, try to get a copy or read it when it is mounted on the website www.spur.org. Most San Franciscans are aware that Muni is necessary in the city, even though many of us still cling to our cars. The expense, not only to us but to the public, is described in an earlier SPUR article on the costs of driving in the city. We don't always want to read about what we and our neighbors are paying for our infatuation with cars, but it is important to acknowledge that an urban area cannot have healthy growth without a sensible, well funded public transit program. The Bay Area League has been study this problem for years, and the Calendar on this website lists the Transportation Day meeting that will be held on Feb. 22 to consider the issue of regional transportation planning. It's good to see two important civic organizations--the League and SPUR--working on the same issues. Let's hope the public buys into the importance of insuring safe, speedy transportation.

I don't live in San Francisco, but it's good to see that the League of Women Voters has a blog up and running. I am happy as always to see women asserting themselves in this world.

Please, everyone, vote for Hillary!

Let's also talk about the cost of NOT driving! While pollution goes down (which is good) the street infrastructure is based on usage. In other words, there is a necessary level of traffic required for the base pack of the streets to hold tightly together and not allow nature to come crashing up through (and shooting on down through our sewer systems). Extreme? Not so! There are many cities in Eastern Europe where changes in economics eliminated the use of both private and public vehicles for many uses. As the usage lowered, so did the city's interest in maintaining the streets (the one in front of your house and to the store and across state) but more importantly the streets and highways practically dismantled themselves and the utilities beneath them within half of the time it would take under normal wear conditions. Be careful what you wish for...it could be that a more efficient city bus or cleaner running cars are really what we need.

Well it seems to me that you are lucky in San Fransisco bay area. You fortunately have 2 parties opposing each other.

Over here in South Africa, we have largely a mushroom type misgovernment that only has their vested interest at heart - their pocket, so very little gets done with regards to our public transport. Our roads are not maintained, taxi's have absolutely no regards to the laws and congestion is at it's worst.

We cannot forfeit our car here, even though the price of gas is excessive, since the current public transport is not developed and is by no stretch of the imagination safe for transport.

Consider yourself luck you don't live in South Africa.
